French and British vessels have rescued 157 migrants from drowning in a joint operation after their boat caught fire while attempting to cross to the United Kingdom.
This is considered the largest maritime rescue operation for migrants in the region since 2008.
According to information from the Pas-de-Calais Prefecture, the fire broke out within the maritime borders between France and the UK, forcing the passengers to jump into the sea.
French maritime authorities stated that the migrants had departed from the Normandy region, specifically from the coastal village of Vulleroz.
They confirmed that no fatalities were recorded in the incident.
Maritime reports indicate that smugglers have been increasing both the size of the vessels and the number of passengers on board. In recent weeks, 12-meter boats have been observed, whereas previously, lengths typically ranged between 8 and 10 meters.
Statistics show that the average number of migrants per boat has risen from 26 people in 2021 to 65 people as of the beginning of this year.
The English Channel is recognised as one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world and has become a primary route for migrants reaching the UK.
Last year, more than 41,000 migrants reached the shores of Southern England via this path. The dangers of this journey claim dozens of lives annually; this year, 14 people have already died, and at least 29 migrants lost their lives while attempting the crossing last year.
