For the first time in the history of irregular migration across the English Channel, a new record has been set for the number of passengers on a single boat, with 230 migrants reaching British shores in one crossing.
The figure is the highest number ever recorded on a small boat. The previous record was 165 people, set in July.
The boat, which was only 15 metres long, arrived in the UK in the early hours of Monday morning. According to images released and statements from French rescue teams, the boat was at serious risk of breaking apart because of the number of people on board. Many of the migrants reportedly had their legs in the water, raising fears of a major humanitarian disaster.
Spokespeople for the UK Home Office and the Prime Minister’s Office said the incident highlights the dangerous tactics used by criminal gangs, who, for financial gain, place extremely large numbers of people—including babies—onto unseaworthy boats for the crossing. According to official figures, the average number of migrants on each boat has risen from 7 people in 2018 to 62 last year.
Despite the new record, overall figures show that irregular migration to the UK has fallen this year compared with previous years. A total of 15,242 migrants have reached the UK so far in 2026, representing a 43% decrease compared with previous years. British authorities attribute the decline to efforts to disrupt the supply chains providing boats and engines to smuggling gangs, with more than 1,100 boats and engines seized.
The English Channel is considered one of the busiest and most dangerous waterways in the world. Many of the migrants who take this route come from poor or conflict-affected countries and apply for asylum after reaching the UK.
To address the crisis, the UK and France signed a major £662 million agreement last April. The deal aims to strengthen security forces along the coast and increase the use of drones and helicopters to prevent people-smuggling gangs from operating and to improve border security.
