On Saturday evening, August 22, 2026, a special ceremony was held in Albertslund, located about 15 kilometers west of the Danish capital, Copenhagen, to honour Kurdish students studying in Denmark.
Representatives from various Kurdish parties, institutions, and associations in Denmark attended the event, alongside the honored students, their families, and academic figures. Among the prominent attendees was the Kurdish engineer Jakub Bouzan, a well-known figure within the Kurdish academic community in Denmark.
The Kurdistan Diaspora Confederation – Denmark was among the Kurdish organisations participating in the ceremony. Representatives of the Confederation highlighted the profound importance of education, supporting the younger generation, and encouraging students to pursue continuous academic advancement.
In his speech, the Confederation’s spokesperson, Masoud Shekh, stated that education is one of the most critical fields for building a Kurdish generation equipped with the knowledge, experience, and skills needed to actively participate in their host societies.
Shekh emphasized that graduation is not the end of the road; rather, it is the beginning of a new chapter for an educated and enlightened Kurdish generation that has grown up or completed its studies in the diaspora.
According to Shekh, students who complete their schooling and university education in the diaspora are uniquely positioned to advocate for the cause of the Kurds and Kurdistan within Western societies through their respective fields of expertise. He noted that an educated and specialized student can become an “ambassador and defender” of their cause simply through their knowledge, work, and active presence in society.
Furthermore, Shekh stressed the vital role of Kurdish youth and students in Denmark and across Europe. He pointed out that their role extends far beyond academic success and professional life—they have the power to support Kurdistan in civil, scientific, and cultural arenas, thereby strengthening the bond between the Kurdish diaspora and their people back in the homeland.
For his part, the President of the Kurdistan Diaspora Confederation – Denmark, Walid Akreyi, noted that the younger generation leads a very different life compared to previous generations. By studying in Danish schools and universities, they are acquiring distinct experiences and skills within a multicultural European environment.
Akreyi pointed out that these experiences provide the youth with broader opportunities to play an active and influential role in Danish society while simultaneously projecting a positive image of the Kurdish people and Kurdistan. However, he added that it remains essential for the youth to maintain a strong connection with their Kurdish language, culture, and identity.
During the ceremony, male and female students from both high school and university levels were honoured as a gesture of deep appreciation for their hard work and academic achievements.
The ceremony was organised by the Kurdish Democratic Unity Party in Syria (Al-Wehda) – Denmark Organisation (Yekîtî).
