Kurdish Woman Appointed Police Commissioner in Germany

Young Kurdish Officer Achieves Senior Security Post Following Successful Completion of Federal Training Program

In a notable milestone for the Kurdish diaspora, a Kurdish woman in Germany has been appointed to the senior rank of Police Commissioner after successfully completing all stages of professional training.

On Feb. 20, 2026, in the city of Oldenburg, it was officially announced that Helikan Ronahi Tolan had assumed her duties as a Police Commissioner in Germany. The decision followed her successful completion of a specialized federal police training program in Bamberg. She graduated as part of a cohort of 454 officers at the intermediate police level.

Her appointment is widely viewed as a testament to the growing role and capability of Kurdish women within formal European institutions.

Beyond her professional security career, Tolan maintains an active background in civil engagement. She is a member of the Yazidi community association in Oldenburg and previously oversaw children and youth affairs within the organization. She also played a leading role in implementing several social initiatives in the city aimed at serving the broader community.

The Tolan family holds a strong social standing within the Kurdish diaspora in Germany. Her father, Telim Tolan, is recognized as a prominent Yazidi Kurdish figure in the country. In recognition of his sustained service, he was previously awarded the Federal Order of Merit by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Helikan’s elevation to this senior position is seen as a continuation of her family’s legacy of service and as further evidence of the successful integration and institutional advancement of Kurds within Germany’s highest public structures.
