On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander Mazloum Abdi to discuss the latest political and security developments in Syria, with a focus on safeguarding Kurdish rights and strengthening regional stability.
The meeting reviewed the evolving political landscape in Syria and broader regional security dynamics, including the situation of the Kurdish people and the organizational role of the SDF in northern Syria.
President Nechirvan Barzani underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and negotiation as the only viable path to resolving Syria’s political challenges. He stressed that Kurdish rights, alongside the rights of other local communities, must be protected within a unified Syria, framed by the country’s constitution and its future governance structures.
For his part, Commander Mazloum Abdi expressed his gratitude to President Masoud Barzani and to the Kurdistan Region Presidency for their continued efforts and constructive role in promoting stability and supporting the ceasefire reached between the SDF and Damascus.
The discussions also addressed ongoing security concerns, including the resurgence of ISIS and other terrorist activities. Both sides emphasized the importance of continued regional coordination to preserve stability and prevent further threats.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment to dialogue, constitutional solutions, and coordinated security efforts as essential pillars for stability in Syria and the wider region.
