UN Chief Marks International Newroz Day

As millions of Kurds across the globe light the fires of Newroz to welcome the arrival of spring, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a formal message marking the International Day of Nowruz 2026.

In his address, the UN Chief highlighted the holiday’s profound significance as a bridge between cultures and a catalyst for global peace and sustainability.

Secretary-General Guterres described Newroz as a powerful “day of renewal” for more than 300 million people worldwide. He noted that the occasion serves a dual purpose: marking the beginning of a new year and celebrating the arrival of a new spring, symbolizing a fresh start for humanity.

“Nowruz can serve as a guiding light for us,” the UN chief stated, emphasizing that the values of the holiday are more relevant today than ever.

Transcending Borders and Differences

In a world often divided by conflict, Guterres stressed that Newroz is a tradition that transcends national borders and political divisions. He praised the holiday for its ability to bring together diverse nations and cultures around a set of shared human values.

He called on people across all societies to move forward together, stating:

“We must move forward together despite our differences, in pursuit of a more peaceful, sustainable, and inclusive world.”

A Legacy of Heritage and Inclusion

The Secretary-General’s message reflects the growing international status of Newroz. Rooted in thousands of years of heritage across the Middle East, Central Asia, and the global diaspora, the holiday is officially recognized by the UN as a day that promotes the “values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families.”

Guterres concluded his message by highlighting the collective responsibility of the international community to uphold the spirit of Newroz—fostering harmony with nature and promoting a future built on mutual respect and diversity.
