The number of first-time asylum applications submitted in Germany during the month of July has fallen significantly. Compared with the same period last year, the number of applications has decreased by nearly 50%.
Today, Thursday, August 5, 2026, the German government announced that it attributes this decline to its own policies, as well as to the European Union’s recent asylum reforms aimed at tightening asylum regulations.
According to Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior, 4,311 first-time asylum applications were submitted in July 2026, compared with 8,293 during the same month in 2025. In other words, the number of applications has fallen by almost half.
This decline is not limited to the month of July. Statistics for this year indicate that asylum applications have been steadily decreasing. According to Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), 39,646 first-time asylum applications were registered during the first half of 2026, compared with 72,818 during the same period in 2025.
The German government considers this decline to be evidence of the success of the policies introduced by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, a member of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU).
It is worth noting that one of the reasons behind the decline in asylum applications is linked to the large influx of refugees that began in 2014. Many of them were accepted by Germany. However, over time, the country experienced a range of social and political challenges, many of which were attributed to refugees. This led to growing public dissatisfaction with both refugees and Germany’s asylum policy. At the same time, it prompted the government to consider stricter laws aimed at preventing people who enter the country illegally from being granted asylum.
