Shifa Barzani in Brussels: Knowledge and Education Are the Key to the Success of the Kurdish Diaspora in Serving the Homeland

Shifa Barzani, General Supervisor of the Kurdistani Diaspora, emphasized during a joint seminar organized by the Federation of Kurdistani Diaspora Youth and the Belgian Students Organization in Brussels that Kurdish youth in the diaspora should equip themselves with knowledge and skills, become genuine representatives of their people, and strengthen their presence within Europe’s decision-making institutions.

Today, Monday, September 7, 2026, in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, a joint seminar was held between the Federation of Kurdistani Diaspora Youth and the Belgian Students Organization at a university hall in Brussels. Shifa Barzani, General Supervisor of the Kurdistani Diaspora, attended the seminar to discuss young people, organizational activities, and the process of integration into Western societies.

In his speech at the seminar, Shifa Barzani stated that Kurdish youth living in the diaspora should arm themselves with knowledge and expertise, become true representatives of their people, and strengthen their position within European decision-making institutions.

During the seminar, the General Supervisor of the Kurdistani Diaspora highlighted the importance of individual change as the foundation for transforming society and the world. Referring to the words of prominent philosophers, he noted that all meaningful reform begins with the individual and with education.

Shifa Barzani expressed his appreciation for the thousands of Kurdish young people abroad who have succeeded in obtaining advanced degrees and qualifications and have become involved in the political, administrative, and security systems of their host countries. He described these achievements as a source of pride for the Kurdish nation.

The General Supervisor of the Kurdistani Diaspora stressed that their primary objective is to organize and bring together the abilities of Kurdish youth and students within the framework of a strong federation so that, free from fragmentation and partisan interests, they can serve the legitimate cause of their people.

He also stated that the time has come for the Kurdish diaspora to act as a united and independent force.

Shifa Barzani also referred to an important historical example, reminding those present that in 1957, Mullah Mustafa Barzani advised Kurdish students to focus above all on their education, because an independent Kurdistan in the future would need educated and highly qualified people.

He called on Kurdish youth to respect the laws of their host countries and to serve as positive examples of Kurdish identity and values. Through this, he said, they can help build international support for the Kurdistan Region.

The General Supervisor of the Kurdistani Diaspora, based at Barzani Headquarters, has undertaken the responsibility of organizing and bringing together the capabilities of Kurds living abroad. He seeks to strengthen ties between the homeland and the Kurdish diaspora and to make use of the expertise, knowledge, and skills of Kurds abroad for the development and reconstruction of Kurdistan.

Brussels, as one of the principal centers of decision-making within the European Union, is therefore regarded as one of the important locations to which the Kurdistani Diaspora gives particular attention.
