In the state elections of Berlin, the capital of Germany, Jian Omar, a Green Party representative originally from Rojava (Western Kurdistan), secured a major political victory by successfully retaining his seat in the state parliament.
According to the preliminary official results of the elections held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, Jian Omar secured his victory for the second consecutive time through the direct votes of constituents in Central Berlin’s District 3. He successfully outperformed his rivals from all other competing political parties.
Earning 29% of the total direct votes in his constituency, Jian Omar ranked first among the candidates, thereby reaffirming his position as the legitimate representative of the district in the Berlin State Parliament (Abgeordnetenhaus). Meanwhile, at the state level, the Green Party maintained a steady position on the capital’s political map by capturing 14.3% of the overall vote.
As a federal state, Berlin is one of Germany’s most important and diverse political centers. Its parliamentary elections have a direct impact on shaping domestic policy and governing the capital. The German electoral system allows voters to choose their representatives through a dual-vote mechanism: one vote for a political party and a direct vote for a local constituency candidate.
Born in the city of Qamishlo in Rojava, Jian Omar has resided in Germany since the early 2000s. As an activist and Green Party politician, his primary focus has been on environmental issues, immigration, social equality, and combating racism. His re-election not only proves his solid and respected standing within German society but also marks a significant achievement for Kurdish representation within the democratic and parliamentary arenas of European nations
