KDC Delivers Referendum Message in Finland

On the Anniversary of the Referendum: The Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation’s Message is Delivered to the Finnish Parliament

Marking the 9th anniversary of the independence referendum of Kurdistan Region, a joint delegation comprising the Kurdistani Diaspora confederation and the Finland Area Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) visited the Finnish Parliament. There, they delivered the official demands and message of the Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation to the Chair of the Finland-Kurdistan Friendship Group.

On September 25, 2026, in the Finnish capital, the joint delegation was warmly welcomed at the parliament building by Laura Meriluoto, a Left Alliance Member of Parliament and Chair of the Finland-Kurdistan Friendship Group, to whom they handed the Confederation’s official memorandum.

During the meeting, the delegation meticulously highlighted the historical suffering, struggle, and immense sacrifices of the Kurdish people. They urged the Finnish parliamentarians to serve as the peaceful voice of the Kurdish nation and to support the outcome of the historic referendum in Southern Kurdistan—a process through which the Kurdish people declared to the world, in a completely democratic and civil manner, their desire to be free and live independently.

In commemorating this profound national achievement, the delegation highly praised the historic leadership role of President Masoud Barzani in guiding the referendum process to success. They also extended their heartfelt congratulations on this momentous day to the proud families of the martyrs and to all the people of Kurdistan, reaffirming their continuous commitment to serving the just cause of their nation.

On September 25, 2017, under the supervision and leadership of President Masoud Barzani, the independence referendum was held in Kurdistan Region and the Kurdistani areas outside the Region’s administration, resulting in more than 92 percent of voters casting a “Yes” ballot for independence. Annually on this date, the Kurdistani diaspora across Europe—particularly in the Scandinavian countries—works tirelessly through diplomatic and parliamentary channels to keep this popular will alive and to advocate for the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people.
