UN High Commissioner for Refugees: Peace is the Only Sustainable Solution to End Forced Displacement

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has stated that the phenomenon of forced displacement reveals a stark reality about the current state of the world: the pace at which people are being displaced and uprooted is far outpacing the speed at which solutions are being found.

During the presentation of a report to the UN Security Council regarding the global situation of forced displacement and refugees, Dr. Barham Salih, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, warned that more than 117 million people worldwide have been forced to flee their homes and homelands. This staggering figure is the direct result of escalating conflicts, violence, persecution, and imminent threats that endanger their lives and safety.

Salih clarified that this issue is not merely a humanitarian challenge but, at its core, a matter fundamentally tied to international peace and security. He firmly emphasized that achieving peace remains the most sustainable and definitive solution to end the suffering caused by forced displacement globally.

Currently, the displacement and refugee crisis has reached its highest level in modern history, driven by prolonged conflicts and the outbreak of new wars in various regions of the world. International humanitarian organizations consistently stress that while humanitarian aid is vital for keeping people alive, it is not enough. Without a strong international political will to halt wars and build stability, it will be impossible to stem the global tide of vulnerable people being forced into migration.
