Representatives of the Kurdistan Diaspora Centre – Luxembourg, including Askander Tamo, head of the Centre, together with representatives of the Kurdish Youth Group, Abdulrahman Mohammad, Amez Engel and, representatives of the Kurdish Women’s Group, Dr. Nigar Ali Hussein and Hevin Mohamad, and KDC member Sheikho Abdo, had the pleasure of meeting with Mr. Paul Galles, Member of Parliament from the CSV Party—the largest political party in Luxembourg’s Parliament and governing coalition—and Alderman of Luxembourg City.
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss issues affecting Kurdish communities worldwide, including the rights of the Kurdish people, the Kurdistan Independence Referendum, and the formal recognition of the Halabja Genocide, the Anfal Campaign, and the Yazidi Genocide. The discussion also focused on strengthening relations between Luxembourg and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, expanding economic and cultural cooperation, and highlighting the diverse religious and ethnic groups living peacefully in Kurdistan.
Mr. Galles showed great interest in Kurdistan, engaging in discussions regarding Kurdish culture, religions, languages, and societal diversity.
The representatives highlighted the Kurdish people’s right to self-determination and expressed their hope that these concerns and aspirations would be conveyed to his party and Parliament.
Furthermore, the dialogue covered opportunities for stronger business ties, including a potential Luxembourgish commercial presence in Erbil, as well as future diplomatic visits between Luxembourg and the Kurdistan Region.
Additionally, the representatives emphasized the importance of the cultural recognition of Newroz as a significant tradition for Kurds living in Luxembourg, and proposed the idea of establishing a Kurdish-Luxembourgish Friendship Group within Parliament.
Finally, concerns were raised regarding Kurdish asylum seekers from Syria, Iran, and Turkey, with a request for careful and compassionate consideration of their cases in light of the ongoing challenges many Kurds continue to face.
The meeting concluded as highly informative, respectful, and encouraging for future collaboration.
