March 11 Anniversary: KDC Statement on Erbil Uprising & 1970 Accord

To the great people of Kurdistan,
To the valiant and resilient people of Erbil, our capital,
To the loyal Kurds across the globe,

In the historical trajectory of the Kurdish national liberation movement, characterized by profound fluctuations and triumphs, March 11 transcends being a mere date on the calendar. It represents our political identity, a symbol of our immutable will, and a living testament to the victory of justice over tyranny.

Today, with a profound sense of national pride, we commemorate two strategic and historical turning points that served as the catalysts for the survival and evolution of our people’s just cause: the anniversary of the historic March 11 Agreement of 1970, and the anniversary of the 1991 Uprising and liberation of Erbil—the city of the Citadel and Minaret.

The March 11 Agreement—a fruition of the blood of our martyrs and the sagacious leadership of our national spiritual father, the immortal Mulla Mustafa Barzani, through the Great September Revolution—shines as the most significant political and legal achievement in our contemporary history.

This accord, for the first time, compelled the Iraqi regime to succumb to the will of the Peshmerga and formally recognize the existence of the Kurdish nation and its legitimate rights. Today, that very historical document remains the legal and political cornerstone of the constitutional entity we possess.

Continuing this legacy of sovereignty, on Mar. 11, 1991, the heroic masses of Erbil, inspired by the spirit of resistance from the September Revolution and guided by the meticulous field planning of President Masoud Barzani and the Kurdistani Front, authored a new chapter in history.

The liberation of Erbil and its purification from the repressive apparatus of the Ba’ath regime was not merely the reclaiming of a city; it was the restoration of national dignity and political self-determination, transforming Erbil into a diplomatic hub and the epicenter of national decision-making.

We, at the Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation, while honoring these momentous occasions, reaffirm that safeguarding the experience of the Kurdistan Region and the achievements of March 11 is a moral and national obligation for every Kurd, wherever they may reside.

We view ourselves as the “unseen soldiers” protecting these gains and pledge to serve as a robust bridge, amplifying the righteous voice of our people and the civilized image of Erbil to the world’s decision-making centers.

On this dual anniversary, we bow in reverence to our immortal martyrs and renew our pledge of loyalty to the sacred path of Barzani, striving together to lead our caravan toward the horizons of independence and further prosperity.

Immortal glory to the martyrs of Kurdistan’s liberation.
Honor to the city of Erbil and the resilient people of Kurdistan.
