The Pope Prays for Migrants Who Lost Their Lives on the Journey July 4, 2026

While the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence with festivities and fireworks, Pope Leo XIV, the first pope born in the United States, spent July 4 on the Italian island of Lampedusa. The purpose of the visit was to honor the tens of thousands of migrants who have lost their lives while trying to reach Europe in search of freedom and a better life.

The Pope’s visit sent a powerful symbolic message against the Trump administration’s hardline immigration policies. He reminded Americans that their country was fundamentally built by immigrants and that protecting human life also means welcoming migrants. At the same time, he called on European leaders to shoulder their historic responsibility in addressing the migrant crisis and to treat with compassion those fleeing war and poverty, stressing that they should not simply be abandoned or turned away.

The island of Lampedusa, the closest point in Europe to the African continent, has for years been one of the main arrival points for migrants. Although official figures show that the number of migrants arriving in Italy this year has fallen to 14,464, the dangers they face have not diminished. Since 2014, more than 35,000 migrants have disappeared or drowned in the Mediterranean Sea. The Pope’s visit continues the path first established by Pope Francis, who visited the same island in 2013 to express solidarity with migrants.
