The Kurdish diaspora in Norway is preparing to hold a large public gathering to mark the anniversary of the 2017 Kurdistan Independence Referendum.
This event is being organised to reaffirm the Kurdish people’s desire for freedom and to commemorate this historic democratic process.
The rally is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 25, 2026, from 18:00 to 20:00 in front of the Norwegian Parliament building (Stortinget) in the capital city, Oslo.
The event’s organizers have chosen the slogan “The Voice of the People for Freedom” for this commemoration, aiming to draw the international community’s attention to the national aspirations and demands of the Kurdish people.
Four main Kurdish institutions and federations in Norway are overseeing the event: the Federation of Kurdish Diaspora Women, the Federation of Kurdish Associations in Norway (FKKN), the Varin Federation, and the Kurdish Cultural Center in Oslo.
The commemoration program will be diverse, featuring various political speeches and messages, artistic and cultural activities, live music, and traditional Kurdish dancing.
The organizers emphasize that this gathering is not merely an annual commemoration, but a vital opportunity to demonstrate the unity and solidarity of the Kurdish diaspora surrounding their nation’s just cause. Furthermore, through this event, they aim to deliver a strong message of independence and justice to Norwegian officials and the world at large.
The Kurdistan Independence Referendum was held on September 25, 2017, during which an overwhelming majority of participants voted in favour of independence.
Although the process faced significant regional and international political obstacles, it remains a historic turning point and a profound expression of national will for Kurds in the diaspora.
The event is commemorated annually through various activities in cities across Europe.
