A Far-Right Extremist Party Wins Regional Elections in a German State
Today, Sunday, September 6, 2026, the voting process for the state parliamentary elections in Saxony-Anhalt, located in eastern Germany, officially began. The AfD’s political platform for this election is built upon several highly controversial issues. These include initiating a massive deportation campaign targeting immigrants, banning rainbow symbols in educational institutions, halting wind energy projects, and altering history curriculums. The party’s lead candidate has expressed strong confidence in winning an absolute majority, stressing that if other parties refuse to cooperate, the AfD is prepared to govern the state entirely on its own.
In a direct reaction to this shifting political tide, Magdeburg, the capital city of the state, witnessed widespread protests yesterday, Saturday. Thousands of citizens took to the streets to demonstrate against Nazi ideology and extremism. Currently, security forces are heavily deployed throughout the city to prevent any potential tension or unrest that may erupt following the announcement of the official results.
The state of Saxony-Anhalt, which has a population of 2.1 million, is currently governed by a coalition led by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
