Far-Right AfD Scores Historic Victory in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Far-Right AfD Party Scores a Historic Victory in Germany

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has achieved an unprecedented victory in the state elections of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, located in the northeast of the country, securing first place. Conversely, the party belonging to the Federal Chancellor suffered a historic defeat.

According to preliminary results, the AfD took the lead by securing over 38.3% of the vote. Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), led by the state’s current Minister-President Manuela Schwesig, managed to garner approximately 35% of the vote, placing second. The biggest shock of the election came for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The CDU’s vote share collapsed to less than 4.9%, meaning it failed to cross the legal electoral threshold and has consequently lost all its seats in the state parliament.

Reacting to the victory, Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, co-leaders of the AfD, emphasized that their party has become the primary political force and the true alternative to the Christian Democrats, thereby claiming the absolute right to govern. Simultaneously, Leif-Erik Holm, the far-right’s lead candidate for the state premiership, expressed a willingness to negotiate with other parties, though he admitted that forming a government would be an exceedingly difficult task.

Despite taking the lead, the far-right is not expected to assume power. All major political factions remain committed to the so-called “firewall” policy, which firmly rejects any form of coalition with the AfD. Instead, it is highly likely that the Social Democrats will retain Manuela Schwesig in her post by forming a coalition with the Green Party and the Left Party.

Political observers and AfD leaders attribute this massive victory to voter dissatisfaction with Chancellor Merz’s failures regarding administrative reforms and the management of immigration. This sentiment was capitalized upon by the far-right party, which campaigned heavily on a promise to establish a large facility for the rapid deportation of rejected asylum seekers.
