The General Supervisor of the Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation (KDC) was received by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to discuss mechanisms for supporting Kurdish refugees.
On Monday, Mar. 30, 2026, Dr. Barham Salih, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, received Shifa Barzani, the General Supervisor of the KDC. Together, they discussed the current status of refugees and the ongoing coordination between both sides.
During the meeting, held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, the Supervisor of the KDC congratulated Dr. Barham Salih on assuming his new post. They subsequently focused on the general situation of refugees and the identification of appropriate mechanisms and solutions to assist Kurdish refugees across the globe.

Another key focus of their intensive discussions was the plight of Kurds displaced by the turmoil and instability in the Middle East who have sought refuge worldwide. In this context, the High Commissioner reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to providing continuous support to all refugees globally, with a specific emphasis on Kurdish refugees.
Furthermore, he expressed his hope for sustained cooperation and coordination between the KDC and the UNHCR to monitor and remain informed about the living conditions of Kurdish refugees, wherever they may be.
Notably, this meeting comes at a time when the Middle East is passing through a sensitive and conflict-ridden phase, which has triggered a new wave of migration and displacement. The appointment of a Kurdish figure to the post of UN High Commissioner for Refugees is viewed as a significant opportunity to further highlight the refugee crisis on an international level and to amplify the voices of the displaced.
In parallel, the Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation has intensified its recent efforts to organize the capabilities of the Kurdish diaspora and establish strong communication bridges with international decision-making centers to better advocate for the rights of Kurds who have been forced to leave their homeland.
