Today marks 38 years since one of the most brutal crimes of the 20th century. On August 25, 1988, the former Iraqi regime launched a widespread campaign of mass extermination against the civilians and villagers of the proud Badinan region.
This orchestrated atrocity, which began with chemical bombardments, mass arrests, and the forced disappearance of thousands of innocent people, was a futile attempt to erase the national identity and shatter the resilient will of the people of Kurdistan.
On this sorrowful and agonizing anniversary, the Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation reiterates that the wound of the Badinan Anfal remains a deep scar on the body of our nation. As the voice of the Kurdistani diaspora across the globe, we renew our pledge to persistently advocate in international arenas for the formal recognition of these atrocities as genocide, ensuring that such horrific oppression is never again inflicted upon our people.
We bow our heads in profound respect and reverence for the victims. Once again, we urge the Iraqi state to fulfill its constitutional, legal, and moral responsibilities by taking serious steps to provide material and moral compensation to the families of the Anfal victims. It is imperative to eradicate the devastating legacies of the inhumane policies perpetrated against the land of Kurdistan.
Eternal glory and peace to the pure souls of the martyrs of the Badinan Anfal, and to all the martyrs who have fallen on the path to Kurdistan’s liberation.
