The UK Home Secretary has announced that, under a new plan, they intend to grant refugee status to people who have fled war, while also bringing them to the UK through legal channels.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said that a new scheme is being introduced to provide refugee status, particularly to Palestinian and Afghan women and girls who have fled war and persecution.
In the first phase, hundreds of refugees will be brought to the UK through safe and legal routes. Later, the number could potentially rise to several thousand people per year.
The scheme will be implemented in partnership with the UNHCR and IRAP, with the aim of discouraging refugees from attempting to reach the UK illegally by crossing the English Channel.
